White Willow, Salix alba, is a member of the salicaceae plant family. Sumerian clay tablets from 3200 BC list White Willow as a medicinal herb and in 400BC Hippocrates also recommended white willow for its medicinal value. The bark was chewed to release medicinal constituents in medieval times. The tree is a popular roost and nesting site for birds and its flowers are a key source of nectar for bees. It has been associated with sadness and mourning. Willow wood is naturally springy and pliant and is chosen for making cricket bats and magic wands. Its rapid growth and ability to be coppiced also made it a favourite for making charcoal. Tolkien famously wrote about ‘Old Man Willow’ in his book, the Lord of the Rings. Magically, White Willow is associated with divination, intuition, femininity, protection, love and moon magic.
