Product Description

Vervain, Verbena officinalis, is a member of the verbenaceae. Its name comes from ‘ferfaen’ – to cast away stones, eluding to it’s traditional, medicinal useIt is also commonly known as holy herb (due to the belief that it was used to prevent Jesus’ wounds from bleeding during the crucifixion) or simpler’s joy. It was historically also called “Herba Sacra’ in Latin and the Romans called it ‘Hiera Botane’, both referencing its use on ceremonial altars. Vervain has also been referenced by Nicholas Culpepperas a herb of Venus and it was one of the original 38 Bach’s flower remedies.  Magically, Vervain was used by the druids in rituals and is protective and useful for divination. It is associated with love and healing. Gerard called it ‘Mercuries moist bloud‘.

Vervain is native to Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. It grows as a herbaceous perennial with lilac flowers at the end of a tall spike. The arial parts are used for tea.

Suggested use: Add 1 teaspoon per mug of freshly boiled and slightly cooled water, allow to steep for 5 to 10 minutes and strain to remove herbs.
