Valerian, Valeriana officinalis, is a member of the caprifoliaceae family, and has a rather strong odour which can be irresistible to cats and rodents, and that Dioscorides named the plant ‘Phu‘ due to it’s smell, although it was used as a strewing herb for bedlinen and the Japanese make a perfume from it. It is a native plant of Eurasia and has been used as a culinary herb and in traditional medicine by many cultures, with a bitter, astringent, hot and sweet energetic. the famed herbalist, Culpepper wrote, ‘The green herb being bruised and applied to the head taketh away the pain and pricking thereof‘. Magically, valerian is used for calming situations and against lightening strikes. The leaves placed under a pillow are said to dispel nightmares allowing dreams to become meaningful. Valerian is also said to protect against emotional and psychic invasion.
Valerian is a perennial with delicate pink-white flowers. It can be found growing wild in the UK.

Suggested use: Add 1 teaspoon per mug of freshly boiled and slightly cooled water, allow to steep for 5 to 10 minutes and strain to remove herbs.
