Thyme, Thymus vulgaris, is a member of the Lamiaceae family. Thyme is pungent, drying, warming and bitter. We know thyme mostly now as a culinary herb but historically it had other uses. The ancient Egyptians used it for embalming bodies whilst the Greeks burned it in temples and added it to their baths a s a bringer of courage. The Romans believed the smoke from thyme would drive off scorpions. In the Middle Ages, thyme was given to knights to bring them courage and was placed under pillows to ward off bad dreams. It was also placed in coffins to allow the deceased safe passage to their next life although I suspect it was also helpful to mask any unpleasant odours! Magically, Thyme opens the paths between worlds and strengthens psychic powers, bringing peace and protection, clearing negative energies.
Thyme is native across Southern Europe and is naturalised in Britain. It is a low lying, highly scented plant with tiny purple or pink flowers.

Suggested use: Add 1 teaspoon per mug of freshly boiled and slightly cooled water, allow to steep for 5 to 10 minutes and strain to remove herbs.
