Rosemary, Salvia rosmarinus, is actually now classified as a member of the Laminaceae family, perhaps not surprisingly, given its highly aromatic nature. It can be found on the shores of the Mediterranean and rosmarinus means ‘dew of the sea’. It is popular amongst cooks for its fresh smell and taste. It has been used traditionally by many cultures. The Egyptians were using it in 3500 BC for embalming their dead and the Romans were said to have brought it to Britain. The 16th Century Herbalist John Gerard wrote that ‘it comforteth the braine, the memorie, the inward senses and restoreth speech unto them that are possessed with the dumbe palsie’. The energetics of rosemary are astringent, bitter and warm. Magically, Rosemary is known as ‘Elf Leaf’ and is associated with protection, driving away negativity, nightmares and effects of aging as well as supporting mental wellbeing.
Rosemary is a Mediterranean woody shrub with lilac flowers that attract pollenating insects.
