Myrrh, Commiphora myrrha, is a member of the burseraceae. The part of the plant used is actually resin which is secreted when the bark is split or damaged, then hardens into crystal like lumps which vary in colour from light yellow to deep amber. It is used as a perfume in cosmetic products and as a flavouring in many food products and as a medicinal herb. The resin can be added to teas, or small pieces can be chewed or burned as incense.
