Motherwort, Leonurus cardiaca, is a member of the Lamiaceae family. The name Leonurus cardiaca comes from the Latin for ‘lion hearted’, much as a mother may be when protecting her children and it is also known as ‘lions ear’ or ‘lions tail’. An old folk tale relates that a village once had a spring that ran through a patch of motherwort and all it’s inhabitants lived for over one hundred years. Culpepper wrote ‘There is no better herb to drive melancholy vapours from the heart, to strengthen it and make the mind cheerful, blithe and merry’. Magically, motherwort is said to prolong the life of spells. It also supports intuition and expanding the aura and third eye. It is also good as a protector.
Motherwort is native across Europe and is naturalised across Northern America. It grows as a herbaceous perennial, up to 75 cm tall with clusters of small pink flowers.
The natural constituents of Motherwort are:
Bitter glycosides triterpenic acids, amines, organic acids, tannins
