Marshmallow root, Althaea officinalis, is a member of the malvaceae. ‘Althaea’ is Greek and said to be the name of the Queen of Calydon. It also means ‘healer’. It’s mucilage constituent was what provided the property that enabled it to be used to make marshmallow sweets by the ancient Egyptians and was used this way for many centuries although the sweets available today contain none of the herbal plant. Gerard described the juice as ‘a clammie and slimie juice‘. Use the root sparingly as a tea otherwise your spoon will be standing up on its own! Marshmallow can also be used in the kitchen. The roots were considered to be an ancient Roman delicacy and the young leaves can also be eaten. Magically, Marshmallow helps to resolve past emotional issues by allowing you to digest them. It can also be used as an incense.
Marshmallow is native to Central and Southern Europe. It grows as a herbaceous perennial, often found by the sea. Both the leaves and the roots can be used.

Suggested use: Add 1 teaspoon per mug of freshly boiled and cooled water, allow to steep for 5 to 10 minutes and strain to remove herbs.
