Maidenhair tree, Ginkgo biloba, is a member of the ginkgoaceae family. It is a ‘living fossil’, having remained in its current evolutionary state for over 270 million years and it has recently been found that trees over 600 years old show no effects of aging. There is a Ginkgo tree at the Buddhist temple at Gu Guanyin that is supposed to be over 1400 years old. Six trees within the blast radius of Hiroshima were amongst the few organisms still living and although they were damaged, they returned to full health. Ginkgo was traditionally planted in sacred spaces in China and Japan and has played a role in traditional Chinese medicine for many centuries. Magically, Ginkgo provides a connection with the teachings of our ancestors and enhances intuition and psychic ability. It is a good altar herb.
Ginkgo is native to China but is also cultivated in other temperate zones. It grows to 25 metres and the leaves are usually harvested as they turn yellow.
Key natural constituents of Ginkgo biloba include:
Flavonoids including kaempferol, quercitin, amentoflavone, ginkgetin and bilobetin, terpenes including diterpene ginkgolides, sesquiterpenes, ginkgolic acids, tannins and essential oils.
