Lime, Tilia cordata also known as Linden and is a member of the Tiliaceae family. Lime appears in mythology, as the form that the gods gave the nymph Philrya to soothe her horror at giving birth to the centaur, Chiron. This is a different herb to that of the citrus lime that gives us the green lime fruit. The flowers and leaf bracts are prized by bees and are used for this delicately flavoured tea. An old tales says that if you fall asleep under a lime tree, you will awaken in faery. Grieve suggested that for hysteria, people took ‘prolonged baths made with the infused flowers‘. Magically, Lime is said to used in love spells and its branches are hung over home entrances for protection.
Lime is a beautiful, majestic, hard wood tree that grows across Europe, both naturally in the wild and as part of park and street planting and it’s sticky sap frustrates car owners who park their cars under it’s branches.
