Gotu Kola, Centella asiatica, is a member of the Apiaceae family. It is used as a culinary herb and as a side dish in many asian cultures and has a long history of being used traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine with bitter, cool and moist energetics. It was listed in the historic, ancient, Indian medical text ‘Sushruta Samhita’. Gotu kola is also known as Indian pennywort and there has been some confusion as to whether this herb should be called brahmi but Wyrd Herbs associates that name with Bacopa. It has also been mistaken for the kola nut, a completely different plant. It is quite a bitter tasting herb, especially if over brewed. The leaves are sold in Thailand in the markets. as an afternoon ‘pick me up’. Magically, Gotu Kola helps to prepare the mind for meditation and is associated with wisdom and longevity.
Gotu Kola grows across South Africa and Australasia. It is a small plant with kidney shaped leaves that enjoys damp and swampy spaces.
