Five Flavour Fruit, Schisandra chinensis is a member of the schisandraceae family. It got its name because it is said to contain all of the five flavours, sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent and was first recorded in the Shennong’s Herbal Classic as an herb with both sour and sweet taste. The Chinese name for five flavour fruit is wu wei zi. It is also known as the magnolia berry. Koreans use the berries which they call Omija into a cordial. They are used frequently in traditional Chinese medicine for supplementing Qi and were considered to be important enough to be offered as a gift to the emperor of the Hezhong territory. Schisandra is a vine that grows across Eastern Russia, China and Japan. It grows up to 9 metres tall with delicate yellow flowers.

Suggested use: Crush 1 teaspoon of berries per mug of freshly boiled and slightly cooled water, allow to steep for 5 to 10 minutes and strain to remove herbs.
