About Me
Who am I?
So, let’s get straight to it. This is not a big business. In fact, it’s really small, just me at the moment. I’m hoping that will change with time. For now, it means that every order you send gets the personal touch. My name is Rachel and I’ve been really interested in herbs since I was very small, making fake blood from mashed up peony petals in the back garden. My degree was in applied biology, very long ago and since then, I’ve worked in a range of biology-based fields, most recently being for nutraceutical companies.
I’ve always said that if I did another big course, it would be my qualification in medicinal herbalism and in 2022, I decided to take that step. A UK diploma in medicinal herbalism isn’t to be taken lightly. It’s a four-year, level 6 (degree level) course with a minimum of 500 hours spent working with a qualified herbalist. I needed something that would be my passion and tie in well with my experience in business, sales and marketing and my love of herbs. So Wyrd Herbs was born!
Why Wyrd Herbs?
Wyrd = Fate
I do feel that my life path has led me to this place, not just practically but also spiritually. I am a deeply spiritual person and being tied to someone else’s business morals and ethics has always been uncomfortable for me so fate has brought me to a place where I can build the kind of business that I would want to buy from.
Wyrd also has spiritual connotations. The Wyrd woman was also the wise woman, the healer and that is something that I am actively working towards. Many of my customers have alternative views on religion and spirituality, returning to the old ways celebrating life and I wanted to provide products that they could be confident of using on the altar as well as for a relaxing cuppa! All my herbs are fully food grade and free from contaminants; pure herbs, sourced ethically and sustainably.
What makes Wyrd Herbs different?
Quality is super important when sourcing dried herbs. Dried herbs almost never look like the fresh plant, so trust is a huge part of your relationship with me as my customer, to ensure that what you receive is the best possible quality.
Dried herbs are a food product and sellers should meet certain criteria to sell to the public. I have been rated as a 5* food hygiene business by my local county council and I have my food hygiene qualifications. I also only buy from suppliers with very rigorous quality testing protocols to ensure that every herb is the right species and free from contaminants. They also have the certification by the BHMA’s Herb Mark Scheme to ensure a commitment to ongoing quality management systems.
Why don’t you talk about medicinal benefits?
Most people are aware that plants can have medicinal benefits. Most of our commonly used pharmaceutical drugs come from research into traditional herbal remedies. However, there are very strict rules regarding what you can say about food and about medicines. Currently, herbs sold for food must not, by UK law, be attributed with any medicinal benefits. If herbs are sold as medicines in the UK, they must meet a different (and much stricter) set of criteria that the big pharmaceutical companies can afford to meet but what small herbal businesses cannot. Even accredited, professional, medicinal herbalists must stick to the rules which require any medicinal herbal practitioner to have a private consultation with a patient before providing herbs as a prescription.
So, morally, ethically, and legally, I can only sell herbal teas as a food product.
Why do you talk about magic?
Lots of people believe that plants have their own spirituality and energy. My herbs are offered both as teas for the pleasure of drinking and for use as part of ritual ceremonies. Any reference to magic is for those people and can be ignored if magic and spirituality is not your thing. If it is, then please feel free to incorporate herbs into your ceremonies.
Please do remember that descriptions are for entertainment purposes only and you should still be aware that if you are taking prescription medication, have a known medical condition or are pregnant or lactating, you should seek advice from your medical practitioner and a qualified herbalist who is a member of a professional organisation such as NIMH or CPP before taking herbs. Please do not offer herbs to other people without making them aware that they should also follow this advice.
