Ashwagandha Root, Withania somnifera, is a member of the Solanaceae family. The name ashwagandha comes from the Hindi word ‘Asgandh’ or ‘like a horse’ for its strengthening, adaptogenic properties. It is also known as winter berry for its bright red/organge fruits. It has a bitter, sweet and astringent energetic. As well as being a very popular herb in Indian Ayurvedic medicine with references in Hindu texts as far back as 6000 BC, it was also used by the ancient Egyptians and Sumerians before 1000 BC and in recent times, it’s properties have been widely researched, helping it to grow in popularity in the West. Magically, Ashwagandha is associated with youth and longevity as well as intellect. It is said to balance the chakras, improve connection to the earth and create grounding and stability.
Ashwagandha is native to Africa and Asia. It is a perennial plant that grows to 75 cm tall with green flowers and a red or orange fruit.

Suggested use: Add 1 to 2 teaspoons per mug of freshly boiled and slightly cooled water, allow to steep for 5 to 10 minutes and strain to remove herbs.
