Burdock, Arctium lappa, is a member of the Asteraceae family. It is probably most famous for the hooks on it’s seed heads that are said to have inspired the idea of velcro and anyone who has had to untangle these from a dogs or cats fur knows exactly how effective they are. This clinging nature once gave burdock the name of ‘beggars buttons’ and lappa, meaning ‘to hold on’ was the name given to it by Pliny the Elder. the root was used to make the drink ‘dandelion and burdock’ and it’s leaves were used to wrap butter, earning it the name ‘Butter Dock’. The root was traditionally eaten as part of the diet, benefitting from soaking before cooking to remove the harsh flavour. Magically, Burdock is protective, strengthening and healing, a plant at the front door is said to prevent bad energy from entering.
