Crampbark, Viburnum opulus, is the inner bark from the Guelder Rose, named after the Dutch Provence and is a member of the viburnaceae family. Other common names include snowball tree or common snowball, after its white pompoms of flowers, water elder due to its preference for damp conditions or European cranberrybush, although it is not related to the cranberry. The berries are edible once cooked and work well in jams. Crampbark has bitter and astringent energetics. Chaucer said ‘The Gaitre-Beries are among the plants that “shal be for your hele”‘. The plant features heavily in Ukrainian and Slavic folk lore as the Fire Trinity: the Sun, the Moon, and the Star and appears on the flag of the president of the Ukraine. Magically, Crampbark is good for letting go; particularly for people who have a very rigid outlook, requiring change or feel stuck in a situation.
Crampbark grows across europe and North America. It has a shrubby nature and grows up to 5 metres tall with bright red berries.
